HISTORY
BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN THE HEART OF AMSTERDAM
our story
Overlooking the Prinsengracht canals, Hotel 717 is the first five star boutique hotel of the Netherlands, delivering luxurious modern care in an atmosphere of historic delights. This monumental canal house has existed since the 17th century, and welcomed guests through its doors as a hotel for the past 25 years. 717’s backhouse was first constructed in the 17th century by city residents lost to history.
19th and 20th century
After the passing of the sugar merchant, 717 housed a variety of people and organisations over the 19th and 20th centuries, all with social functions that improved the lives of its city residents. For many years it acted as the headquarters of the Wilhelminahuis – a non-profit establishment initiated by Queen Wilhelmina herself.
1997
In 1996 the property was renovated while keeping the heritage of the monumental canal house intact. The ambition was to turn 717 into a boutique hotel, inspired by the exclusive private guest houses that were gaining popularity in Scotland. So it was that in 1997 the first luxury boutique hotel of the Netherlands opened its doors to the public, and has welcomed guests ever since.
